ABSTRACT
Introduction: We consider imaging signs as mnemotechnic, since they allow us to create associations in a systematic way to recognize them, according to a specific case. The dural tail was first described in 1989 in relation to meningioma, consisting of a thickening and enhancement of the dura after the administration of contrast that presents equal or greater enhancement than the tumor, sharpens as it moves away from it and must be seen in two or more adjacent sections by magnetic resonance and it is not a tumor infiltration. Objective: To describe the semiology and fundamental characteristics of the dural tail in intra and extra axial tumors. Procedures used to collect the information: Guaranteed search sources were used, reviewing and analyzing references through the study of 51 articles selected in journals and electronic publications indexed in Spanish that were updated on the subject in the last two years, of which 26 were taken because of their scientific nature. Most relevant results: The dural tail is not present only in extra-axial tumors and may be bordering the tumor, besides being seen not only in brain tumors but also in the spinal canal. Global considerations: The dural tail is distinctive of meningiomas as the main extra axial tumor but it can be observed in cerebral intraparenchymal lesions and it is an important semiological element that is better evidenced by magnetic resonance, being of great diagnostic value in its diagnosis.
