Current challenges of health Psychology in Cuba

ABSTRACT
Introduction: despite the recognition of the theoretical and practical results that Psychology has achieved in Public Health, it is considered that does not achieve the necessary integration with other disciplines due to the still existing rootedness of the biologist model in the health-disease process. Objective: to explain the current challenges facing psychology within public health in Cuba. Method: a review of the literature was made with a critical analysis. Results: the challenges that Health Psychology faces today are: psychosocial stress and social support in facing chronic diseases; the role of personality and group processes in the maintenance or loss of health; the training of human resources, organizational aspects, health education and scientific production. It was considered that the biologist-medical thought still persists on the social component of health problems. Psychological and social aspects that mediate in the health-disease process were explained and are the main challenges facing the Health Psychology in Cuba. Conclusions: to face the current challenges of Psychology within Public Health in Cuba, gives the opportunity to contribute much more in the area of research and to appreciate the value of the factors that affect the psychological well-being and quality of people’s life. That’s why; changes in the way of research and in the training and qualification of future psychologists are required.
