ABSTRACT
Objective: To show the experience of extraperitoneal laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in our institution and
compare it with international reports.
Material and method: From November 2004 to December 2007 we
performed 18 laparoscopic radical prostatectomies in patients with localized prostate cancer. All patients were
evaluated with digital rectal exam, prostatic specific antigen and transrectal prostatic biopsies. All the procedures
were performed by single surgeon and the outcomes were evaluated in a retrospective manner.
Results: Four
patients needed conversion to open surgery, the opering time was 302 min; blood loss was 700 mL; four patients
required blood transfusion; the mean hospital day care was 4.5 days; the postoperatory cancer stage was: two
patients pT2a, five patients pT2b, three patients pT2c, seven patients pT3a and one patient with pT3b.
Conclusion:
The laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a safe and effective treatment for localized prostate cancer in hands of
experimented surgeons, with advantage comparing with open surgery without increasing complications.
