Knowledge of Comprehensive Medicine discipline in Pinar del Rio by students and professors of a polyclinic

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the historical significance of Comprehensive Medicine in Pinar del Río represents a valuable educational cycle for students and professors.Objective: to characterize the knowledge of Comprehensive Medicine in Pinar del Río by students and professors at Pedro BorrásAstorga University Polyclinic.
Method: a descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out at Pedro BorrásAstorga University Polyclinic, Pinar del Río city, during the fourth quarter of 2017. The target group was constituted by 149 students of the second academic year of medicine and 78 professors; while the sample was made up of 70 students and 40 professors, using different methods: theoretical, empirical and statistical (descriptive).
Development: regarding the analysis of the basic literature and class plans of the discipline, no aspects of the Comprehensive Medicine in Pinar del Río were observed. In the literature review of scientific articles, no research on the subject was required. Related to the surveys used, more than 50% of the deficient students were aware of the discipline, while professors’ opinions were positive, exceeding 50%. The whole of the study sample (100%) considered important to learn of this discipline for their future development as professionals, as well as the existence of study materials for the teaching of medicine studies.
Conclusions: strengthening knowledge ofComprehensive Medicine in Pinar del Río discipline is a fundamental goal to be achieved. The inclusion of its themes to educate generations of professors and students of health represents new challenges and missions in the polyclinic.
