ABSTRACT

Introduction: cataract is present when the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque; resulting in blurred vision once it reaches a certain magnitude and it makes difficult to see when interfering with the organized passage of the light rays which form the image in the retina. To the present, the only therapeutic treatment is surgery, which has proven to be highly effective.
Objective: to assess the visual quality in patients operated on unilateral cataract through the techniques of phacoemulsification and mini-nucleus at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital from August to October 2015.
Method: an observational, descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was carried out where the visual results were assessed in patients operated on unilateral cataract using the techniques of phacoemulsification and mini-nucleus with the implantation of rigid and foldable intraocular lenses at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital from August to October 2015. The target group consisted of 20 patients with this disease who were operated on this hospital during this period of time. The analysis of the data was presented in statistical tables for better understanding, using the summary measures of absolute frequency and percentage.
Results: 50 % of the sample belonged to the group of 60 to 69 years old, when measuring the visual acuity without crystals after the operation 70 % reached the reading of the optotypes of 0.3-1.0, while with crystals they reached the 100 %. The refractive defect that predominated in the pre and postoperative period was astigmatism with 70 and 95 % respectively.
Conclusions: the evidence of visual improvement in cataract operated patients helps to elevate their quality of life.
