Characterization of sexual behavior in a group of elderly

ABSTRACT

Introduction: population aging makes it necessary to establish new working guidelines that will take care of a growing population, because sexuality in old age should continue to be a source of pleasure and not of restlessness or frustration.
Objective: to characterize the sexual behavior of a group of elderly people attended at the Leon Cuervo Rubio Clinical and Surgical Teaching Hospital, during 2015.
Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study was carried out in the Geriatrics department of this institution during the period in question, randomly selecting a sample of 147 elderly. A semi-structured survey was applied to obtain the data that gave output to the variables analyzed. The ethical principles were complied with.
Results: female sex predominated (59,86 %), the age group 60-69 years (48,98 %), widowers (41,50 %) and those who lived with their children (31,97 %); mostly counting a low quality of life. 91.84 % reported not having privacy; 39,46 % did not have sexual relations, with sexual satisfaction 52,38 %. Among the criteria presented by older adults, the need to receive information on this subject (100 %) prevailed, as well as the poor view that society offers to the elderly who maintain an active sexual life (89,8 %).
Conclusions: the analysis of sexuality in the elderly and its characteristics, allowed to unravel the false conceptions that around the individuals of this age appeared, thus guaranteeing a pleasant and satisfactory old age.
