ABSTRACT
Introduction: dentistry attention to the elderly is one of the aspects of health mostly involved in primary care, due to the high values of prevalence and incidence of oral diseases. That is why the basic work team has as a task to carry out activities of promotion, prevention, healing and rehabilitation aimed at this population group in order to maintain or improve the oral health of these patients. Objective: to determine the oral health status of the elderly in the health area "Julián Grimau.” Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with a group of 270 older adults belonging to the health area "Julián Grimau", Arroyo Naranjo municipality in 2016. A survey was applied and the oral examination was performed, to collect the variables of interest. Results: in the group studied, the female sex predominated with 63.7%, and 47% were between 60 and 74 years old. Poor oral hygiene prevailed with 69.6%, as well as an average of 20.8 lost teeth. The most noticeable involvement of the oral mucosa was the stomatitis sub prosthesis in 20.7% of the individuals, followed by the leukoplakia with 12.96%. Conclusions: the elderly population of this health area is characterized by deficient oral hygiene, with a great loss of teeth; with the stomatitis sub prosthesis affecting the bucal mucosa that most affects them.
