Incidencia global y manejo intrahospitalario de la diarrea aguda en el Servicio de Urgencias de un hospital universitario no gubernamental

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Acute diarrhea is a global public health problem. Aim. Determine the incidence of adult patients with acute diarrhea admitted in our hospital, as well as determine the presentation, development and management of patients requiring hospitalization. Material and methods. A retrospective study which included patients with acute diarrhea or probably infectious gastroenteritis for 6 years. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory data were analyzed. Results. 2007 was the year with the highest prevalence with a total of 16,934 subjects, of whom 6.9% had acute diarrhea or probably infectious gastroenteritis and 715 were hospitalized. 87.46 % had diarrhea, 85.05% abdominal pain and 77.11% nausea/vomiting, 31.06% leukocytosis, l6.34 % prerenal acute renal failure and 61.58% were given antibiotics. Conclusion. Acute diarrhea accounted for 6.7 % of the emergency rating. Hospital stay was brief in order to maintain the water condition and accompanied by antibiotic therapy.REFERENCES
