ABSTRACT
Acute kidney injury is a frequent complication in critically ill patients
and it is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The
evaluation of acute kidney injury is carried out in conventional
manner by means of static variables as RIFLE and AKIN, which are
based on late markers of kidney damage such as urinary volume,
creatinine level and glomerular filtration rate. Renal resistive index
(RRI) is a marker of AKI early assessment which is characterized by
being accessible, reproducible, quantifiable, dynamic, and with a
high sensitivity and specificity. The aim of this paper is to present
the principles of the renal resistive index and its application in daily
assessment of the seriously ill patient.
