ABSTRACT
Introduction: skin and soft tissue infections have become a world health problem which also affects our country and covers neonates who, because of their physiological immaturity and immunological characteristics, have their own peculiarities. Objectives: to update topics related to the world health problem represented by skin and soft tissue infections in neonates; the diagnostic criteria and the therapy.
Methods: a search about this topic was made by using searchers such as Ebsco, Hinari, Scielo and Virtual Library of Health in addition to referemce books. The keywords for the search of bibliographic information were defined. The information search was restricted to pediatrics and neonatology from 2008 to 2015.
Results: the literature review was made to provide information to neonatologists, pediatricians and family physicians, taking into account the increase of skin and soft tissue infections in the neonate and the most observed clinical forms of presentation are mastitis and impetigo. Cellulites and omphalitis are severe forms of presentation in this phase of life and require combined medical treatment. The emergence of conventional therapy-resistant germs makes their management increasingly complex.
Conclusions: community-acquired skin and soft tissue infections in the neonate are on the rise, with locations, extensions and atypical evolution, so immediate empirical treatment must be applied after evaluating the severity of patient´s condition at the hospital.
