ABSTRACT
Introduction. The presence of asymptomatic bacteriuria is common
during menopause, increases progressively with age, and has
a higher incidence in patients with urinary incontinence and institutionalized.
The predisposing factors are: lack of estrogen, cystocele,
uterine prolapse, residual urine and urinary incontinence.
Objective.
To determine the incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria in
postmenopausal patients.
Material and methods. An observational,
descriptive and retrospective study during the period comprised
from January 1st to June 30th 2011; in patients from the Hospital
Menopause Clinic for Women, Ministry of Health, Mexico City.
Results. 231 patients, age 50.16 ± 6.7 years. 9.5% incidence of
asymptomatic bacteriuria. Microbiological profile prevalent: 77.2%
Escherichia coli , 18.1%
Staphylococcus coagulase -positive, 4.5%
Staphylococcus
coagulase -negative.
Conclusions. The incidence of
asymptomatic bacteriuria in these patients was high. The higher
incidence organism isolated was
Escherichia coli .
