ABSTRACT
Lactic acidosis secondary to metformin-administration is a rare entity
but extremely serious. It is associated with several risk factors:
hepatic failure, renal failure, elderly and heart failure. We presented
a case of lactic acidosis secondary to metformin-administration
in a patient without the presence of risk factors for its development.
The patient required substitutive treatment for renal function, then,
reduction of significant levels of lactate and correction of metabolic
acidosis a few hours after initiation of hemodialysis. In patients with
metformin-associated lactic acidosis, early treatment should be instituted
to promote a favorable evolution and mortality.
