ABSTRACT
Mirizzi syndrome described in 1948 by surgeon
Pablo Luis Mirizzi, is a rare complication that occurs
in approximately 1% of patients with cholelithiasis.
It consists of the impaction of a gallstone at the
level of the cystic duct or infundibulum, which
subsequently produces a compression of the
common hepatic duct, which can cause erosion and
generate a cholecysto-choledochal fistula.
Clinically it presents with jaundice of obstructive
origin, and common symptoms of biliary pathology.
The preoperative diagnosis remains of great
difficulty, several studies have been used among
them are found; abdominal ultrasound, endoscopic
retrograde cholangiopancreatography, percutaneous
cholangiography or cholangioresonance, according
to availability in the hospital centers.
The treatment is still surgical, the operative approach
can be open or laparoscopic, depending on the stage
and the experience of the surgeon in charge.
