ABSTRACT
Introduction. Negative pressure therapy (NPT) is a mechanical treatment that is use as an adjuvant
in wound healing; provides a sterile, occlusive healing environment that reduces bacterial load, promotes
granulation of the tissue by stimulating healing by second or third intention, reducing the surface
area of the wound.
Material and methods. Observational, retrospective and descriptive study, aiming to present the experience
of management in complex wounds of patients treated with NPT of the Angiology Department
of the Hospital de Especialidades of Centro Médico Nacional La Raza.
Results. A total of 93 patients who received NPT were analyzed. The hospital stay has an average of
26.4 ± 5.3 days. The NPT modality was continuous at 91.4%. The silver type of sponge used was 91.4%.
The negative pressure used was 125 mmHg in 86%. The most frequent etiologies were infection of the
surgical wound (40.9%). Vascular exposure was present in 22.6%. The most frequent location of
the wounds was the pelvic limb. The most frequent type of closure was by third intention (68.8%).
Conclusion. NPT is useful for managing complex wounds, accelerating wound healing, facilitating intrahospital
treatment, better pain control, controlling the presence of infection, helping to close wounds
in all cases, avoiding the use of complex reconstructive surgeries.
