ABSTRACT
Background. There are only few papers describing the incidence overweight and obesity. Studies on overweight and obesity incidence would allow a better description of the epidemics and evaluation of public health meassures. Objective. To calculate the incidence of obesity in participants of two consecutive surveys of prevalence of infarction risk factors in employees of the Hospital General de México (PRIT). Methods. For both surveys the following individual data were collected; age, sex, weight, height, body mass index (BMI). It was possible to have two assessments in 378 men and 1057 women. The changes in weight and BMI, as well as the incidence of obesity were calculated. Results. Two hundred and fifteen men and 648 women gained weight. Men gained (mean (Confidence Intervals 95%)) 4.32 (4.72; 3.92) kg and 1.54 (1.68; 1.39) kg/m2, and women 4.24 (4.46; 4.02) kg and 1.76 (1.85; 1.67) kg/m2. Men group had 7 (1.8%) new cases with BMI › 30 kg/m2, 28 (7.4%) with BMI of 27-29.99 kg/m2 and 25 (6.6%) with BMI of de 25-26.99 kg/m2. Women presented 71 (6.7%), 103 (9.7) y 79 (7.5%) new cases respectively. Incidence rate per 1000 person-year for BMIs of › 30, 27-29.99 and 25-26.99 were respectively 6.69, 25.83 and 24.88 in men, and 24.2, 35.66 and 27.35 in women. Conclusions. The most of the study population presented weight gain. The studied population had an alarming rate of incidence of overweight and obesity. Further cohort studies are necessary to establish the incidence of overweight and obesity in other populations.
