ABSTRACT
Pericardial effusion in neoplastic disease presents a recurrence rate of up to 70% after pericardiocentesis. Percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy in malignant pericardial effusions of large size and recurrent tamponade is a very effective and safe treatment, producing a direct pleuropericardial communication that allows the fluid to drain into the pleural space. This paper intends to make a brief review of the subject and present a clinical case of a 69-year-old woman with a history of ovarian neoplasia, pulmonary metastasis who underwent percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy in the course of a cardiac tamponade due to effusion severe pericardial. The patient evolved favorably at 30 days without recurrences. The authors conclude that percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy is a simple, easy to reproduce and effective technique. Based on these aspects, its use in this group of patients can be generalized to avoid approaches with greater morbidity and mortality.
