ABSTRACT
Background: depression is a frequent condition in women. Its frequency increases after menopause. On the other hand, osteoporosis is a disease whose morbidity also increases after the hormonal changes that occur in the post-menopause period. However, the mechanisms that might be involved in this association are not established. It was taken into account that almost 30% of Cuban female population is in the post-menopause stage. We consider it is relevant to carry out an update of the subject in the media. Objectives: to define common aspects in the pathogenesis of both diseases, to identify the frequency in Cuban female population as well as the presence of both conditions in national journals.
Methods: a bibliographical review of articles was conducted, related to the pathogenesis of the two diseases, national journals and also health yearbooks (1995-2016), diagnostic-therapeutic proposals of osteoporosis and depression that appear in official texts used in the country.
Development: hormonal changes, some clinical manifestations present in depression and certain psychoactive drugs have a deleterious effect on the bone. In turn, osteoporosis could favor depression. It was not possible to obtain the morbidity of both entities or to identify neither articles nor texts reporting both topics.
Conclusions: although there are physiological elements that justify the connection between both entities, there is insufficient knowledge about the topic.
