ABSTRACT

Pain, suffering and death are a constant presence in the daily life of physicians. However, as a result of failures in their training, many of them have difficulties in dealing with such issues. The introduction of medical students and young physicians to palliative care represents an alternative to overcome this deficit. The performance in didactic scenarios of Palliative Care showed us that the knowledge coming from Biomedicine is necessary, but not enough to handle the complex situations with which we commonly face. The incorporation into our clinical and didactic practice of models congruent with the Medical Humanities, such as narrative-based medicine, has been very promising, as described in the experience report presented in this article.
