ABSTRACT
Introduction: atherosclerosis is currently considered an epidemic that has become in a public health problem worldwide. Morphometric methods in biomedical sciences have favored its knowledge. Objective: to characterize morphologically and morphometrically the atherosclerotic lesion of the aorta in autopsied patients.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at “Cmdte. Manuel Fajardo Rivero” Clinico- Surgical University Hospital in Santa Clara from December, 2012 to May, 2014. An intentional sample of 40 aortas was selected and studied using the atherometric system.
Results: fibrous plaque prevailed in the thoracic segment while severe plaque predominated in the abdominal segment. Statistically significant differences were corroborated when exploring descriptive stadigraphs of atherometric variables in both segments.
Conclusions: morphometric study constituted an important element to evaluate the prevalence and severity of atherosclerosis in the population of Villa Clara, as well as, its consequences in relation to the occurrence of death due to ischemic cardiovascular causes. Some studies have been made in Villa Clara, but this line of research needs to be further studied.
