Psychoeducational intervention program aimed at parents of school children with epilepsy

ABSTRACT
Background: Epilepsy in childhood causes difficulties in parents for an adequate education and facing of the disease. Objective: To propose a psychoeducational intervention program aimed at parents of school children with epilepsy for the adequacy of attitudes and knowledge regarding the disease. Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional study was carried out, where the felt needs related to epilepsy were identified in 30 relatives of school children with this diagnosis and also the normative needs according to the criteria of 10 specialists. They were used fourth main techniques: the semi-structured interview, the attitude scale towards people with epilepsy, the key informant technique, and the expert criteria. Results: The knowledge of most of parents about the disease was insufficient; they expressed dissatisfaction with the information offered by doctors and worries about the medical prognosis and future development of their children. Overprotection prevailed in 80 % of parents and 83 % do not feel prepared to face the disease. Conclusions: There exist in parents educational needs regarding the disease that bring about inadequate knowledge and attitudes, which coincided with the criteria of specialists. Its identification allowed the design of the proposed program.
