ABSTRACT

Background: For Cuban science as well as for all countries, the publication of their research results is very important for scientific development. Objective: To compare the evolution of the Cuban Journal of Surgery in relation to the magazines: Brazilian Surgical Act, Journal of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, Chilean Journal of Surgery and the Portuguese Journal of Surgery. Methodology: A descriptive and retrospective study was conducted over a period of five years (2012-2016). The variables were analyzed: type of article, article number per year, frequency, positioning, impact factor and immediacy index. Five general surgery journals belonging to the following countries were selected for the study: Cuba, Brazil, Chile, and Portugal. The regional SciELO database was taken as a reference. Results: The section with the most published articles was that of original articles and the one with the fewest publications was that of review articles (1268 and 88 respectively). Because of the frequency of the journal, the one with the most published numbers was the Brazilian Surgical Act. The impact factor was higher in the Cuban Journal of Surgery and the highest values of immediacy were reached by the Brazilian Journal of Surgery and the Brazilian College Magazine. Conclusions: The Cuban Journal of Surgery is in fourth place according to the variables studied and in comparison with the other selected surgery journals; which indicates that its visibility must be improved taking into account the study variables.
