Hepatic traumatism. A five-year study at “Celia Sánchez” Provincial Hospital

Background: Abdominal injuries constitute one of the most expensive problems in health. Objective: To characterize the liver traumatic injuries at "Celia Sánchez". Provincial Hospital. Methodology: A retrospective and descriptive study was carried out in 96 patients with diagnostic of some type of liver traumatic injury at "Celia Sánchez" Provincial Hospital, from June 2010 to Julio 2015. The variables were quantified: age, sex, and etiological agent of the traumatism, liver degree injury, injured hepatic segment, practiced surgical procedures, classification according to the Injury Severity Score, stays, reoperation rates and mortality. Results: The masculine sex was the most affected one (60.42 %). Wounds by knives prevailed (38.64 %), first degree lesion (42 patients), the affectation of the segment IV (37.84 %) and the packaging with compresses (25.62 %). According to the Injury Severity Score most of the injured people were between 25 and 39 points. Mortality rates and reoperations were 19.79 % and 17.24 % respectively. Conclusions: Young men and wounds by knives prevailed. First degree lesions in the segment IV of Couinaud were more frequent, treated surgically with packaging. The prognostic index used was practicable to predict mortality.
