ABSTRACT
Objective: To report the 5 year experience in congenital cataract management at the Hospital General de Mexico. Methods: A retrospective study of patients with the diagnosis of congenital cataract, between 1997 and 2002 is reported. We asses age, sex, laterality, cataract morphology, ocular and systemic abnormalities, surgery performed and its complications, rehabilitation methods, pre and postoperative visual acuity and amblyopia treatment.
Results: We revised the charts of 54 patients, 34 bilateral (65%) and 19 monocular (35%) cases. The most frequent ocular abnormality was strabismus (14 patients) and nystagmus (11 patients). Down syndrome was the most common systemic association. We performed surgery in 31 cases, 25 with IOL implantation. The main complication was the posterior capsule opacity.
Conclusions: The treatment of these cases is still controversial; however, we can expect better visual results with an early treatment and rehabilitation.
