ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the clinical and histopathological features of sebaceous gland carcinoma of the peri orbital region in a Mexican ophthalmologic reference center.Design: Retrospective, descriptive, observational.
Methods: Cases with histopathological diagnosis of sebaceous gland carcinoma were collected (1989-2003) and complementary clinical information was obtained from the charts. All those cases without chart, microscopic slides and/or paraffin blocks were excluded. The histological sections of the cases stained with hematoxylin and eosin were reviewed.
Results: Of a total of 25 cases, just 14 accomplished the inclusion criteria. The 66.3% of cases were women and 35.7% men. The mean age at presentation was 70 ± 12.7 years; range, 48 to 101 years. The right eye was affected in 53.3% of the cases. None of the patients had bilateral involvement. One case developed both superior and inferior eyelids involvement. The most common clinical presentation was palpebral mass in 85.7% of the cases, pain in 42.9%, ocular yeast in 35.7%, foreign body sensation and irritation in 14.3% each and redness in 7.1%.
Conclusions: The sebaceous gland carcinoma of the periorbital region in our population has women preponderance. The mean age at the time of diagnosis is 70 years. The superior lid is most frequently involved. We did not find cases with caruncle involvement. The most common clinical misdiagnosis was basal cell carcinoma in more than half of the cases. At time of diagnosis the duration of symptoms was longer than 6 months in most of the cases.
