ABSTRACT
Since they appeared, the social networks seek to unite communities with common thinking, they are spaces that allow sharing ideas, knowledge and solutions; many of them have gained an indisputable popularity: Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Bebo, Cyworld, Skyblog, hi5, Friendster, Orkut, Live Journal, among others. Healthcare professionals worldwide have academic social networks: Esanum, Sermo, Doctor.net.uk, Neurosurgic, Doc2doc, Medicalia, ResearchGate and Mendeley, which facilitate the exchange of information, discussions of cases, as well as the advances on new treatments and medications. The aim of this review is to characterize some academic social networks, among them, those of the public health branch, to offer their professionals virtual socializing spaces where to present their scientific work.
