ABSTRACT
A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out to identify the knowledge of family caregivers of elderly people with psychiatric illnesses, taking 650 elderly people from the People 's Council No. 9 belonging to the University Polyclinic ¨Asdrúbal López”, Guantanamo, and a study sample of 100 elderly people in an intentional way , Which were those who attended the office during the study period from July 2013 to December 2014, with the result that the female sex and the age group of 60 to 69 years were the predominant ones, in 74 % the schooling is high as a grade Of coexistence children predominate and according to family attitude indifference and hostility, 70.83 % were dysfunctional families and schizophrenia predominated as a mental illness.
