Risk factors of nosocomial pneumonia in patients with stroke admitted in a mixed intensive care unit

ABSTRACT
Introduction: nosocomial pneumonia in patients with stroke is associated with a high risk of both death and significant costs.Objective: to describe the risk factors of nosocomial pneumonia in patients with stroke admitted in the mixed intensive care unit of “Joaquín Albarrán” Hospital during 2015.
Method: a descriptive, retrospective and transversal trial was developed. The sample was formed by 89 patients with confirmed stroke, who developed nosocomial pneumonia.
Results: there was a domination of the female sex, average age of 73.7 years; early form of pneumonia; and the ischemic stroke. The most frequent risk factors found were: alteration of consciousness, the age of 60 years or more, the presence of Diabetes Mellitus, and prolonged hospitalization, furthermore related with a high risk of death. Gram-negative germs were predominated, particularly Klebsiella sp and Pseudomona aeruginosa in a less level.
Conclusion: the identified risk factors is associated with nosocomial pneumonia, that is why its monitoring and prevention can contribute to reduction the mortality rate in patients with stroke.
