Invasive pneumococcal disease at a pediatric critical care unit

ABSTRACT
Introduction: infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide due to an infectious disease potentially avoidable by vaccination.Objective: to characterize patients with invasive pneumococcal disease admitted to the intensive care unit of the Juan Manuel Marquez Pediatric Hospital during the period from January 2010 to December 2015.
Methodological design: an observational, descriptive, retrospective trial was performed. With a universe constituted by 47 patients under the age of 18 admitted to the intensive care service of the Juan Manuel Marquez Pediatric Hospital with a diagnosis of invasive pneumococcal disease. The sample was 44 children. For the collection of the information patient’s medical records were used. The primary data were processed in the SPSS 22.0 statistical program. Descriptive statistics were used.
Results: of the 44 patients, 26 were males and 18 females, for the 59.1% and 40.9%, respectively.
Conclusions: serotypes 14 and 19 A were the most frequent. Serotype 14 was isolated in all clinical forms. Pleural effusion was the most frequent complication, followed by septic shock.
