ABSTRACT
Introduction: Since its creation, radio broadcast has had a role that, although it is not a protagonist one, has managed to influence in the communities. Its use has been extended towards educational guidance and, in many cases, with an approach based on healthcare delivery. The management of health issues in mass media is of vital importance if we consider that a bad procedure may misinforms the patients who expect adequate orientation. Therefore, orientation radio shows must be properly organized, and radio broadcast professionals and from others health areas must master the information that may or may not be disseminated, in order to avoid behaviors such as self-medication or self-healing, and manage to, whether in the short or long term, materialize changes in lifestyle towards a healthy projection. Objective: To elaborate a wide range of theoretical considerations about the radio broadcast's practical function in health promotion.
Methods: A descriptive study based on the method of bibliographic review, the application of synthetic analysis, induction-deduction and modeling to elaborate a monograph of consultation directed to health and radio broadcast professionals, and structured in several epigraphs: generalities of radio broadcast and its association with health promotion. Radio broadcast and its function in health promotion and prevention and, finally, the radio broadcast's educative function.
Conclusions: Radio broadcast is an instrument for education and its potentialities are implicit when it works to dynamically educate, inform and guide the society, with messages about health promotion and disease prevention. On radio broadcast, several health campaigns have been carried out, as well as managed to modify lifestyles with healthcare-based approaches. In this educational process, the health authorities must mediate as referees to advise and avoid campaigns with inappropriate content.
