ABSTRACT
Introduction: The approaches from which health has been analyzed influence the training of the physicians who deliver primary healthcare, the knowledge of health promotion they acquire, and the actions that characterize their professional performance. Objective: To know the main approaches on health and its relation with the physician's training and performance in health promotion, as well as the contribution of the social determinants approach.
Methods: Descriptive study. Historical-logical and dialectical methods were applied for the interpretation of the health-disease process. Documentary and bibliographical review was used as an empirical method.
Conclusions: We described the presence of the biomedical approach and of lifestyles, its relation with health assessment from the biological aspect, the risks and their relation with professional performance. The need is argued for a focus on the social determinants of health in the process of training the physicians and towards a new interpretation and construction of individual and collective health.
