ABSTRACT
Introduction: Malnutrition in the hospitalized pediatric patient is a common problem with significant clinical implications in the short and long term. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of nutritional status of patients admitted to the Juarez Hospital in Mexico, according to current anthropometric recommendations.
Material and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study in patients over one month to 16 years of age, the measurement of weight and height/length was performed in a standardized way, determining the growth indicators proposed by Gomez and Waterlow and the body mass index (BMI), according to the World Health Organization.
Results: Of the 333 patients studied, a prevalence of malnutrition of 32.6% was found, the most altered indicators were weight-for-age (-0.51 z) and height-for-age (-0.49), BMI reported a prevalence of cases of malnutrition of 10.5%. Overweight or obesity was found in 25% of patients.
Conclusions: The use of growth indicators to detect malnutrition in the pediatric population plays a key role compared to the use of BMI.
