ABSTRACT
This proposition is a result from a theoretical research, mainly based on a philosophical perspective. This research is motivated by some questions about essentialist conceptions of gender and discussions of certain perspectives related to human variability. The objective of this research is to comprehend gender identity by means of principles concerning difference-based identity. It included a wide bibliography related to gender studies and the field of identities. Difference-based identity is an idea that is present in the theory of culture, and an important part of reference in this study. The historic-logical method and the hermeneutic method have been included in order to achieve the systematization of conceptions, continuities and changes in some identity aspects and its relation to meanings in different contexts. As a result, the comprehension of gender identity from the above-mentioned principles is clearly explained, because they are not always visible in gender studies. In addition, it accounts for many essentialist points of view and the final exclusion of the category of gender identity—present in some expressions of the post-structuralist feminism—, offering a complex comprehension of this category.
