ABSTRACT
The fights of the feminist movements make gender studies increase during the sixties. Later, masculinity studies started to develop. A heritage of the African ancestors and part of Cuban identity, the Abakua Society is an all-male association that has not been studied enough from a gender perspective. This paper aims to determine how the masculinity expressions of these people intertwine with the current masculinity patterns of our society. In order to do so, a descriptive-transversal study was developed, implementing a qualitative methodology. Some techniques, such as participating observation and in-depth interviews, were used. The sample was selected by the snowball technique on a voluntary participation. It was composed of 15 active members of the Abakua Society. In the analysis of the results, the following categories were explored: general information, meaning of being Abakua and apprehension of the concept of being a man, paternity, sexuality, masculinity, homophobia, and new tendencies to socialize masculinity. The main conclusion of this research was that the masculinity expressions of this initiated men intertwine perfectly with the masculinity models assumed by Cuban men.
