ABSTRACT
Background: Laryngeal carcinoma represents 2% of all cancers in humankind. Among its risk factors we find: cigarette smoking, alcoholism, gastroesophageal reflux, and masculine gender.
Objective: To assess the characteristics of patients with laryngeal carcinoma at the Hospital Central Sur de Alta Especialidad de Pemex.
Patients and methods: We assessed the characteristics of patients with laryngeal carcinoma at the Hospital Central Sur de Alta Especialidad de Pemex in a period of 13 years, starting at 1990. We only included patients with verified histopathology diagnosis and with a complete clinical file.
Results: We found a total of 125 files, but only 45 met our criteria; from these, 13% were women. The main risk factor was the association of alcoholism and cigarette smoking. 43% of the patients were from Veracruz. The mean duration of symptoms were nine months, being dysphonia the main symptom in 87% of the cases, with an 81% of compromise at the glottis. The most frequent stages were I and III. The given treatments were radiotherapy on 47% of the cases, followed by surgery on 31%, and from those, total laryngectomy was the most common surgical procedure. Among other surgical treatments we found decortications and CO
2 laser resection. From the whole, only nine patients presented reactivation of the tumor after treatment.
Conclusions: The reports of the studied population are similar to those on other parts of the world, with a high incidence at the states around the Mexican Gulf. In order to classify the tumor it is not necessary the laryngeal mapping.
