ABSTRACT
Background: Managing Science and Technology Innovation in medical sciences accounts for better ways of development that boost health services of high standards. Objective: to illustrate the development of some initiatives, carried out by a group of specialists, concerning the improvement of work organization based on process management approach. Methods: an intervention study in the Department of Postgraduate Science and Technology Innovation of Medical Sciences School in Matanzas Medical University was conducted, a review of internal work reports and Ministry audit, produced during 2012-2016; description of science and technology innovation system, through the functions that define each subsystem (planning, research ethics, programs and projects, scientific production, scientific formation of human capital, integrative agents, intellectual property and quality management), analysis of relations between subsystems with the support of a relations’ matrix, identification and preliminary mapping of processes. Results: systemic and holistic recognition of scientific and research work held in the faculty; first steps into processes standardization, and work improvement considering the mission of the section. Conclusions: process approach may boost, on one hand, a more collaborative environment and appropriate working climate; and, on the other, a higher scientific and research performance of the university of medical sciences, for it is focused on science and innovation related processes improvement.
