ABSTRACT

Introduction: the attention to the terminally ill and the application of care in the dying process, are one of the most complicated and difficult aspects of the family and health professionals, particularly nursing, for their direct and individualized care. Objective: to evaluate good nursing practices in patients receiving palliative care. Method: an educational intervention was carried out in a group of nurses from the polyclinic Angel Ortiz Vazquez, May 2016 - June 2017. From 230 nurses, it was selected a sample of 50 nurses working in the family doctors' offices, that had patients with end-stage diseases at the beginning of the study. Results: the professionals had inadequate knowledge about palliative care, the therapeutic bases and the basic instrument for better quality of life and comfort, as well as activities to be developed with these patients and their families, results that were modified in an appropriate way, once the intervention is over. Conclusions: An adequate performance of the nursing professional in his/her good practices before a patient tributary to palliative care should not only be considered as a habitual resource of the health programs, but also as an experience that has to promote a dignified and humanitarian attention to people and families in this difficult reality and as long as it lasts.
