ABSTRACT

A retrospective observational descriptive study was conducted with review of the medical records of admitted patients with the diagnosis of peritonsillar abscess in the Carlos M. de Cespedes Hospital of Bayamo, from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016 with a total of 52 patients out of 55, excluding 3 patients due to one presenting a Ludwig's angina and two patients with an abscess of the last molar. The following variables are investigated: age, sex, origin, symptoms and signs, variety of the abscess, surgical procedure, hospital stay and treatment, obtaining the following results: the average age was 35.4 years, the main symptoms and signs were odynophagia, fever and bulging of pillars, the left anterior variety predominated, the longest interval of stay was 1 to 5 days and the antibiotic most frequently used was penicillin.
