ABSTRACT
Clostridium difficile infection in recent years has emerged as a major infection control challenge within the world’s health institutions, as it is one of the major agents of etiological healthcare-associated infections, causing significant impact on the patient and the institution. Our country is no exception, since several hospitals have experienced outbreaks of Clostridium difficile, especially the presence of the highly virulent strain BI/NAP1/027, which has caused incidence rates similar to those reported in Europe and the United States. The presence of Clostridium difficile in hospitals represents a great challenge for leaders in infection control, as it breaks with paradigms in hospital epidemiology.
