ABSTRACT
Introduction: People over 60 years of age, representing 13 per cent of the world’s population, are estimated to reach 25 per cent by 2050, with an annual growth rate of 3 per cent, and a life expectancy of 83.6 years in Mexico. This stage of life conditions morphological and physiological changes, making them susceptible to being carriers of multiple pathologies, such as alterations in nutritional status.
Objective: to establish the relationship of the primary caregiver’s overload to nutritional status and functional dependence.
Material and methods: A total of 60 hospitalized patients were included in the geriatric service of the Juarez Hospital in Mexico, assessing their nutritional status by means of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the body mass index adjusted for age and serum albumin determination, the degree of overload of the main caregiver was carried out by means of the Zarit questionnaire and the functional status by means of the Barthel questionnaire.
Results: The population was stratified into 3 groups (no overload, slight overload and intense overload) according to Zarit, finding worse scores of the MNA as it increased; 21.23,18.45 and 16.4 points respectively (p = 0.02). Pearson’s correlation analysis of nutritional status was performed with the degree of overload (-0.426 p = 0.001) and functional status (0.607 p ‹ 0.001).
Conclusions: The greater the degree of overload in caregivers, the worse nutritional status of patients. Malnutrition is associated with a worse prognosis, so efforts to limit this complication in this population should be increased.
