ABSTRACT
Introduction: the increased activity of the myeloperoxidase enzyme has recently been associated in the environment with several pathological conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, kidney disease, lung damage and Alzheimer's disease. Objective: to determine the association of myeloperoxidase enzyme activity with risk factors for vascular damage. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara from January 2015 to December 2016. The universe consisted of 416 workers and a sample of 90 people was worked on, by sampling probabilistic, to which serum myeloperoxidase was determined, as well as cholesterol, triglycerides and glycemia. Results: the average of the values of the activity of the enzyme studied was between 0.210 and 0.235. The average value of this activity in men is 0.233, higher than the value 0.212 for women. The average value of enzymatic activity in hypertensive patients was 0.254, which exceeded very significantly the 0.194 value of non-hypertensive patients. Diabetes mellitus was significantly related to the enzyme studied. Conclusions: in arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, the activity of the enzyme shows significant values as a predictor of vascular risk.
