ABSTRACT
The tumoral pathology of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses are unified by the narrow anatomical relation between these
structures, that in many cases difficult the exact location of the origin place. Pathologically, the nasal and paranasal sinuses tumors
are divided in epithelial and nonepithelial, and both are subdivided as well in benign and malignant. The most frequent benign
neoplasia is nasal papiloma. The malignant tumors of nose and paranasal sinuses constitute 1% of all malignant neoplasias of the
organism, and near 3% of the originating ones of upper respiratory tract; most frequent is squamous cell carcinoma. With such
antecedents, a observational study was made, cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive and opened that included patients with
nasal and paranasal sinuses tumors that taken care in National Medical Center “20 de Noviembre” between January 1994 and
December 2002. It was excluded from the study patients with diagnosis of mucocele, polyposis and fibrous displasia; 247 patients
participated altogether who fulfilled the inclusion criteria, 96 women (39%) and 151 men (61%) with average age of 45 years. Of
them, 85 (34.4%) displayed benign tumors, 160 (64.7%) malignant tumors, and two (0.8%) had coexistence of benign and malignant
tumors. Most frequent tumor was the squamous cell carcinoma (28.3%), followed by juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (12.1%).
The patients with nasal and paranasal sinuses tumors appear with nonspecific symptoms that can correspond to any pathology of
inflammatory type, nasal obstruction, nasal bleeding and symptoms of sinusitis due to the obstruction.
