ABSTRACT
In hostile environments, where non-straight population is rejected and its rights and personality are vulnerable and defenseless, it is very hard to find same sex male couples as functional and quite satisfied as they should be. According to the circumstances, to these couples a relationship based on love, genuine attraction and commitment is not an option but a need. But that is not good enough, because these couples must face homophobia, deeply rooted in the collective imagination and very evident in social places. Fortunately, there are some resilient same sex male couples which have been able to find some psychological resources to face these difficulties, and even sometimes emerge stronger from them. This study is focused on these couples and is aimed at characterizing the strengths that define them as resilient. A qualitative methodology is used to study six couples from Havana from a systemic, positive and personal development-oriented perspective. As result of this research, it was found that the hardest adversities these couples have met derived from homophobia, against which different sociopsychological configurations appear to turn the couple into a safe space full of satisfaction and potentialities for its members. Knowing the dynamics of resilient couples allows beyond all doubt to carry out more appropriate actions concerning prevention, promotion and intervention in search of equity and wellbeing of individuals, couples and families.
