ABSTRACT
Introduction: The increase of the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases such as the diabetes mellitus (DM), and its complexity are an important economic, political and social challenge; Type 1 DM is the most frequent disease in adolescence. Objective: Characterize the family of adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus who were assisted at Angel Arturo Aballí Maternal-Child Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in 19 patients diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, who were assisted in the endocrinology service at Angel Arturo Aballí Maternal-Child Hospital from January to March, 2015. Semi-structured interview techniques, the FF-SIL and the IRFA were used to collect the information. Results: Of the relatives interviewed, 89.4% were mothers. Median and extendad families (57.9%) were predominant, with large single-parent families accounting for 70%. The nuclear families accounted for 36.8%. The history of DM in first-degree relatives was very low. The economic conditions of the families were good in 78.9%, with 52.6% of the families moderately functional. The family repercussions of Type 1 DM were severe for 31.6%. Conclusions: Median and extended families predominated. The family history of Diabetes Mellitus was not frequent; most of the families had good economic conditions. A high percent of families were assessed as moderately functional, having the Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus a severe family effect.
