ABSTRACT
Introduction: Alcohol dependence affects several areas of the subject’s life. The association of cognitive disorders in these patients has a significant effect on the therapeutic prognosis, and it has brought about the design of more suitable intervention strategies. Objective: Characterize cognitive disorders in women with alcohol dependence who are assisted in the women addiction service in Havana. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive investigation was carried out from June 2013 through June 2015. 51 alcohol-dependent women were included in this study. The Cognitive Miniexam, the oral version of the Trail Making Test and the semantic verbal fluency test were applied to them. Results: 55 % of the studied women had evidences of cognitive disorders in the Cognitive Miniexam, with 26 as average score. The most affected spheres were the short-term memory and visual constructive abilities. 60% had difficulties in the Trail Making Test (oral), which was significantly associated with the family history of alcoholism (p<0.04). 36% had difficulties in the semantic verbal fluency test. Conclusion: Cognitive disorders may frequently appear in investigation tests, as well as in specific tests for executive functions in alcohol-dependent patients.
