ABSTRACT
Background. Sexual dysfunction is frequent in women with diabetes. Objectives. Identify the frequency and type of sexual dysfunction in women with type 1 diabetes. Material and methods. A transverse descriptive study of cases and controls was conducted at the Endocrinology Service of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, in 120 sexually active women in reproductive age, 60 with type 1 diabetes, the other 60 without it (control group). Variables. Occupation, skin color, age, education, body mass index, marital status, religious beliefs, age at first menstruation, first sexual intercourse, time with partner, personal pathological history, use of medication, couple relationship, toxic habits, sexual frequency, erogenous zones, phases of sexual response (International Sexual Function Index), determination of thyroid stimulating hormones and tetrahydrotyrosine, cholesterol, triglycerides, glycosylated hemoglobin and fasting glucaemia. Outcomes. Sexual dysfunction was 40% in diabetic and 33.3% in non-diabetic women. The arousal disorders were significant in diabetic women (8.3% versus 23.3%), p = 0.0244. Peripheral polyneuropathy was observed in 100% of diabetic women with sexual dysfunction, p = 0.0002. Sexual dysfunction was frequent in women with or without diabetes in reproductive age. Metabolic control did not influence the frequency of sexual dysfunction in diabetic women. Conclusions. Sexual dysfunction was frequent in both groups. Arousal disorders prevailed in women with diabetes, and did not influence the metabolic control. Socio-economic, demographic, clinical and biochemical factors were similar in both groups of women.
