ABSTRACT
Despite the hegemonic model of masculinity has been most appreciated and considered natural, both the social reality and scientific literature have shown diverse forms to construct male identity. Men who do not strictly adhere to this construction will see themselves involved in a discrimination process because they do not follow the gender rules of a patriarchal society that restrict unequal spaces and behaviors to both sexes. The aim of this research is to systematize in scientific literature the theoretical bases concerning masculinity studies in Europe, according to the date they appeared. Among the main outcomes, the author found these studies has been characterized from the beginning by evidencing the superiority of men over women, the features of hegemonic masculinity and power between men and women, and among male groups, as well as multiple forms to construct male identity.
