ABSTRACT
Lead (Pb) is a worldwide distributed heavy metal that causes severe damage to humans, in several systems, mainly the central nervous system (CNS). Among the more susceptible groups to the damage are children up to 15 years of age. Several authors have carried out studies in different age children groups and have found that Pb is responsible for irritability, ataxia, convulsions, learning problems, hyperactivity, visomotor system deficiency; in newborn infants, low birth weight, aggressive behaviour and a reported case of fetal anencefalea. Due to the existent background, it is important to establish early massive detection programs in children to settle the appropriate medical care measures.
