Level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS in adolescents in a medical office

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the appropriate knowledge on the virus of human immunodeficiency and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome by the adolescents are essential in the achievement of a responsible and safe sexual education. Objective: to evaluate the level of knowledge about the virus of human immunodeficiency/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in adolescents of a Medical Clinic. Method: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in the Doctor’s Office No. 30 at Pedro Borrás Astorga University Polyclinic from Pinar del Río city, in the period of January to March of 2017. The target group comprised 120 adolescents, 60 were selected by simple random sampling. A survey was carried out designed to this purpose with qualitative variables that were summarized by means of descriptive statistics. Results: few health promotion work and education activities regarding human immunodeficiency virus / acquired immunodeficiency syndrome were identified for adolescents in the Doctor’s Office. The general evaluation of 70 to 79 with 33.3% prevailed in them, difficulties in the subject differences between human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome with a score <70 in the 61.7% of adolescents. There was a predominance of the adequate level of knowledge in the subjects related to educational actions (93.3%) and safe practices (90%), respectively. Conclusions: the assessment of the level of knowledge about human immunodeficiency virus / acquired immunodeficiency syndrome represents an educational activity which should be approached in adolescents from the primary health care level, which constitutes a solid argument concerning knowledge for its adequate management, control and prevention.
