The independent study, perspectives at the current Cuban university

ABSTRACT
Introduction: independent study is an essential element within the Teaching Learning Process in Cuban universities nowadays; it can be approached from very different perspectives. On the other hand, it contributes to a correct orientation and training towards the professional life of the future graduate, not only for the technical and social sciences but also for health care. Objective: to divulge the conceptions that Cuban university professors have in relation to the independent study, specifically their planning, orientation, evaluation, improvement and innovation. Method: the analysis carried out was based on the application of a survey to collect information from 85 professors of the five university degree courses, two from the University of Medical Sciences and three from Pinar del Rio University, the data collected were analyzed in a descriptive way, a non-parametric analysis (Kruskal-Wallis) was carried out in order to analyzed if there are differences. Results: the professors surveyed stated that, the questions of the survey were very important and that these questions are updated with the trends observed in the current Cuban university regarding the independent study of the students. The highest scores are given to the key elements such as the planning and orientation of independent study. There are significant differences between the degree courses in which they work and the years of experience of professors. Conclusions: the success of university professors, to a large extent, pays special attention to the intimate relationship between planning, orientation, execution, control, improvement and innovation of independent study.
