ABSTRACT
In 1981 a new syndrome appeared in human
populations in the United States characterized by
a deficiency in the immune system. Patients presented
with unusual infections and cancer and a
new acquired immune deficiency was postulated.
A great progress has been made in the last years
about its epidemiology, pathogenesis and treatment.
Comprehension about the pathogenic
course of this disorder is basic for the clinical
and treatment understanding of HIV/AIDS. In
this review we analyzed the normal immune response,
general characteristics of HIV, its life cycle,
its evolution and natural history and chronic
inflammation associated disorders.
